The dictionary says that shame is “a painful emotion caused by a strong sense of guilt, embarrassment, unworthiness, or disgrace”. Many people feel ashamed after experiencing violence – like what happened is their fault. It can also be like a snowball that gets bigger and bigger – like feeling worthless after being abused, then taking a drug to cover up that feeling, then feeling guilty for taking drugs… the feelings are very deep and hard to change. We can know that violence is never the fault of who it happens to, but we need ways to remind ourselves of this every day.
