LAVA

Learning takes place in the world, a world to which we all have a responsibility – a response ability. The creators of this site hold a critical focus on that world together with our curious focus on people’s learning processes. Learning is a human right, and people who have a difficult or joyless relationship to learning have had this right violated.

These violations are systemic in nature: marginalization, discrimination, poverty, racism, lack of honour for diversity in sexual orientation and gender, overtaxed and misguided school systems, among so many other things, all create barriers to learning. The centre of our curiosity-based approach is held by a radical respect for all people’s complexity, and a vivid (and at times livid) acknowledgement that the problems and solutions are not private or individual – they’re public and too pervasive.

So we don’t approach people in the spirit of ‘fixing’ anything that’s wrong with them. We approach the realities around us with the conviction that a better, less violent world is possible. We insist we can all participate in bringing it into being when places of learning, formal and informal alike, for all ages and stages, are recognized as central sites for positive change.
